Power Factor Survey Process

A Power Factor survey is crucial for maintaining the efficiency and longevity of your power factor correction (PFC) system. Here's our process:

Initial Consultation

  • Evaluating the customers municipal bill to determine if they are on a demand-based tariff, ensuring the financial viability of power factor correction.
  • If the customer is not on a demand-based tariff we assess their current site load and capacity limitations to determine if power factor correction is required to utilise their full available capacity.
  • Consulting with the customer to identify the number of systems installed onsite, the operating voltage of the systems and their current operational status.

Quotation for site inspection and surveys

  • Based on the gathered information, we can provide a detailed quote for a full site inspection and survey, tailored to the specifications of the equipment installed onsite.

Onsite inspection and survey

  • Test Critical Components:  Conduct thorough testing of capacitors, fuses, contractors, reactors, and controllers to ensure each component is operating correctly and efficiently, reducing the risk of failure and maintaining optimal system performance.
  • Controller Setup:  Verify and configure the controller settings to match system specifications and site requirements, ensuring accurate operation and adaptability to specific load conditions, thereby optimising energy usage and system reliability.
  • Safety and Protection Parameters:  Check and confirm that all protection and safety parameters are correctly set on the controller along with operational limits to prevent system degradation and potential electrical hazards, ensuring the safety of both the equipment and personnel.
  • Dust Removal:  Clean the panel to remove dust and debris, which can cause overheating or electrical shorts, thus ensuring the longevity and reliability of the PFC system.

Detailed Health Report

  • Based on the site inspection we then provide a comprehensive health report detailing the condition of all PFC components, identifying any issues, and offering actionable recommendations and quotation for maintenance or upgrades to prevent future failures and improve efficiency.

Next steps after your survey

Data logging

After completing the survey and compiling foundational data, the next steps are determined based on system health.  Measurement data is required to assess if the existing capacity installed onsite is sufficient.  This can be achieved through permanently installed online electricity measurement, online power factor monitoring or short term quality of supply (QOS) logging, which also detects if harmonics are present onsite and may require additional PFC protection.

Maintenance, Repairs & Upgrades

Based on survey results and data logging, we provide data-driven recommendations, cost and ROI analyses for repairs and upgrades, ensuring responsible spending. By prioritising projects based on their financial impact and return on investment, we maximise resource utilisation and economic benefits.

Continuous PFC Monitoring

Online PFC monitoring allows for control and insight into your PFC systems.  Our platform provides real-time data and analytics, enabling proactive issue resolution, performance optimisation and continuous, efficient operation from anywhere, at any time.

Annual Surveys

It is critical that power factor systems be professionally surveyed at least every twelve months, potentially more based on operating conditions like heat and dust to ensure the safe working condition and extending longevity of your equipment.

Our expert team conducts detailed surveys and inspections to identify inefficiencies in your power factor correction (PFC) systems. We pinpoint issues before they escalate, ensuring your systems operate at peak performance, reducing energy costs, and preventing unexpected downtime.

Risks of Neglecting Power Factor Maintenance

  • An underperforming power factor system will lead to Increased monthly electricity bills due to higher demand-based charges.
  • Sites that are operating close to their capacity limits could start experiencing frequent outages.
  • Higher risks of electrical fires and downtime caused by excessive heat, dust accumulation, and increased loads.
  • Reduced equipment lifespan due to poor maintenance, significantly increasing overall cost of ownership.
