Risk Mitigation in Electrical Distribution & PFC Systems

Risk Mitigation in Electrical Distribution & PFC Systems

Ensuring the safety and reliability of electrical distribution boards and Power Factor Correction (PFC) systems is crucial for ensuring proper risk mitigation strategies for commercial and industrial facilities in order to prevent fires, protect assets, and ensure the safety of personnel. Below are key strategies for mitigating risks focusing on fire suppression, safety sensing, and control.

Safety Sensing and Control

Cloud-based sensor technology with IoT and multiple communication protocols (LoRa, NB-IoT, cellular) enables real-time data access and immediate action, ensuring connectivity even in remote locations.

1. Temperature Sensors:  Monitor the ambient temperature within panels and DB rooms to ensure optimal operating temperatures are maintained and set up triggers to alert you when dangerous levels are reached.

2. Smoke and Gas Detectors: Install detectors to identify black and white smoke and harmful gases, ensuring safety for both electrical systems and personnel.

3.  Monitor Power Factor and Load
: Continuously monitor the power factor and load conditions to ensure the PFC system is operating efficiently and immediately be notified when power factor drops below set thresholds.

4. Switching & Control:
Use automated systems to disconnect power in case of detected anomalies such as overcurrent, short circuits, or overheating, smoke detection in order to prevent potential fires.

5. Fire Suppression Systems
:  Safety is paramount, and our fire suppression systems are designed to protect your critical infrastructure by swiftly detecting and extinguishing fires, minimizing damage and downtime, ensuring personnel safety, and preserving your valuable assets.

6.  Annual Inspections & Surveys:
It is critical that electrical and power factor equipment be professionally surveyed at least every twelve months, potentially more based on operating conditions like heat and dust to ensure the safe working condition and extending longevity of your equipment.

7. Thermal Imaging:
Uses infrared cameras to capture images showing temperature variations, helping identify hot spots and potential overheating in electrical panels not visible during visual inspections.

8.  Harmonic Measurement & Mitigation
:  Measure and analyse harmonic levels in the electrical system to identify potential risks.  Where very high harmonic levels are present and sites are experiencing issues with electrical equipment the installation of harmonic filters could be necessary to protect sensitive equipment.

Conclusion

By following these risk mitigation strategies, facilities can significantly enhance the safety, reliability, and efficiency of their electrical and PFC systems, protecting assets, ensuring the safety of personnel, and maintaining business continuity.
