Operator performance

Standard OEE sees a machine; it never sees the person running it. Yet the operator drives the first minutes of every stop and the discipline of every planned one. This is the human half of your losses, made visible.

The human half of a stop

When a line stops, the operator is the first responder: they notice it, diagnose it, attempt a fix, and decide when to call for help. When a changeover is scheduled, the operator decides whether it starts on time and follows the routine. None of that shows up in a machine reading, but it's where a large share of recoverable time is won or lost. Augos measures it because the operator terminal captures the human response directly.

Operator discipline

Discipline is whether the agreed way is actually followed: planned stops starting and ending on time, changeover steps done in order, stops classified rather than left blank. A planned 30-minute changeover that runs 50 isn't a planning problem, it's a discipline one, and only measurement tells the two apart. Discipline is coached, not engineered, so seeing it is the whole battle.

Operator benchmarking

Augos benchmarks each operator against your own line's best, the fastest, cleanest runs it has actually achieved, with outliers stripped out, not a textbook standard nobody believes. Broken down by task, it shows who is strong and weak where, turning the vague Lean idea of "unused talent" into a concrete coaching plan with a number on it, and surfacing the best performer as the one to learn from.

Operator comparisons are there to find opportunities for coaching, training and process improvement, not to judge individuals in isolation.

Evaluation & resolution time

Two of the five phases of a stop belong to the operator, and they're where operator performance shows up as recovered availability:

Common questions

Isn't scoring operators just surveillance?

Only if it's done badly. Augos judges on the median, so one bad shift doesn't define anyone, and against the line's own proven best rather than a textbook target, so the bar is one a colleague has already cleared. The aim is coaching and fairness, not a leaderboard to punish.

What actually makes one operator better than another?

Mostly how they handle a stop: noticing it fast (evaluation), clearing more of them without help (resolution and % solved by operator), and keeping to the plan on changeovers (compliance and consistency). All of it is learnable, which is why the best operator becomes the training benchmark.

How is this different from standard OEE?

Standard OEE sees the machine, not the person. It tells you availability was low; it can't tell you that one shift's stops run twice as long as another's. Operator performance is the layer that names who, and by how much.
