Site hierarchy, measurement points and "Not Measured"

Your site is a tree. A parent point already includes everything measured beneath it, plus a calculated Not Measured node for the part of the parent that no sub-meter covers. So to isolate a portion you subtract, you never add. Adding a parent and its child together double counts.

The parts

Measurement Point. The unit of everything: access, reporting and the application programming interface all work at point level. A point whose name carries a PM serial number is a physical meter. A point without one is usually a summation of the points beneath it.

Site Point. The top of every site. Usually virtual.

Not Measured. Not a meter. It is a calculated node, always shown in red, equal to the parent reading minus the sum of the measured children. It exists so the numbers stay honest: if your sub-metering does not cover the whole of a branch, the platform shows you the uncovered remainder rather than quietly losing it.

What you will see

  • "Our sub-meter reading is higher than the main meter above it."
  • "The main switch plus the tenant meter does not equal the municipal bill."
  • "There is a large Not Measured figure and nobody can explain it."
  • "Can we rename Not Measured to something our tenants understand?"

Why it happens

  1. Double counting. The parent already contains the child. To get the portion that is not the tenant, subtract the tenant's point from the parent, do not add.
  2. A child larger than its parent. This is not possible in reality, so it means the parent meter was offline for part of the period. Check the parent first, before questioning the data. Unless there is solar on site.
  3. A growing Not Measured figure. This means the sub-metering does not cover the whole branch. Ask what the parent physically feeds. Many customers use Not Measured deliberately, as a way of accounting for a load without buying another meter.

What to do

  1. Open Consumption Breakdown and look at the tree, not just the totals. The indentation shows what sits under what.
  2. Write down what each meter physically serves before doing arithmetic on it.
  3. Subtract to isolate; do not add.
  4. If a child exceeds its parent, check whether the parent was offline. See My meter is offline.

Good to know

  • Not Measured cannot be renamed. It is a system calculation, not a sub-meter. If you need the uncovered remainder to appear as a named series in charts, ask support about a non-hierarchical virtual point. See Virtual measurement points.
  • On sites with solar, a parent can legitimately be lower than the sum of its children, because surplus generation from one child offsets another child before it reaches the parent. See Net and gross on sites with solar.
  • Points are shown as a pipe-delimited path, for example Company|Site|Building|Main switch. Quoting the full path back to support is the fastest way to be sure you are both looking at the same meter.

Still stuck
