Power quality, dips and surges
Standard Augos metering records at sixty second intervals. A voltage dip usually lasts a fraction of a second, so it is largely averaged out over the minute and often invisible. For proper power quality evidence you need a quality of supply logger, which Augos rents out or have permanent panel mount ones available.
What the standard meter can and cannot show
Can: the larger and longer dips, visible in minute-interval data. Supply outages, with their start and end times. The demand spike when a site restarts after an outage.
Cannot: the split-second events that damage equipment. Transients. Harmonics. Anything that needs sub-second resolution.
When tenants claim equipment damage
Insurers ask for evidence, and minute data does often catch the larger events well enough to support a claim. Augos has gone back over several months of minute data, identified and dated every visible dip month by month, screenshotted each, and attached the underlying data sheets so the managing agent could hand them to the insurer.
That is a manual exercise and worth asking for explicitly. Send:
- The building and the measurement point.
- The period you need covered.
- Any specific dates and times tenants have reported.
Be clear with the insurer about what the data is: sixty second interval readings, not a power quality record. Presenting it as more than it is helps nobody.
Doing it properly
A quality of supply logger is the right instrument. Augos quotes these for hire, and also sells a panel-mount power quality meter which is installed independently of the standard metering. If dips and surges are an ongoing operational problem rather than a one-off claim, that is the route.
